Bassam Al Hassan

Description

The Head of the Security and Military Office in the Presidential Palace (following the assassination of Brigadier General Muhammad Suleiman). He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 2016 and serves as the Chief of Staff of the National Defense Forces (which he founded on a national level in Syria). Previously responsible for Unit 450, tasked with safeguarding Syria's chemical weapons. He also served as the Director of the Information Office in the Presidential Palace. He is implicated in numerous violations against the Syrian people, particularly in overseeing sensitive operations related to the use of chemical weapons. A document bearing Major General Bassam’s seal and signature circulated, reportedly authorizing the assassination of Syrian civilian and military opposition figures abroad. He has been listed in British, European, Canadian, and American sanctions, primarily due to his involvement in chemical weapon attacks. U.S. sanctions were imposed on him on 05/08/2014, European sanctions on 05/23/2011, and British sanctions on 10/16/2012.
